We had three new people show up last night to help us build beds for Tammy's children.
It is always a tough thing to explain exactly what we are doing. Yes, we build beds for poor kids. We could just stop there and that should be enough. But there is more. We have been on a journey trying to learn about what is and how does one become compassionate. That part is harder to explain. Maybe they just want to build beds and not get all hung up on all the deep snap. Feeling the need to at least explain why we do what we do (which is always an interesting and challenging question as it relates to altruistic behavior - I frequently ask the why question with people I see doing good things - many of them struggle to answer it- maybe that's because it is not as much a head thing than a heart thing), I have been thinking about ways to put it in some brief words and throw it out there.
We are on a journey of compassion. We believe compassion originates from and is an attribute of God. Seeing the lack of it in our own lives, we are looking for ways to learn about it and make it part of our being. We believe the secret to knowing and being compassionate is somehow tied up in the doing, but it is not automatic. So we do with the eyes and ears of our heart attentive. We work shoulder to shoulder in a mystical community; we intentionally search for the needy; we look into their eyes while, at the same time, paying close attention to what is happening in the deepest parts of our being, paying close attention to what is happening around us, trying to sense the wind of the Spirit and follow it as we open our hands and give away the beds.
aaaaaa.....I don't know....how else can I say it...
