Being and Doing Revisited

ME: I have a new item on my "things to do before I am too old to do them" list
J: Oh, what is it?
ME: Free a slave.
J: [thinking a bit...] It would be interesting to think about why its on your list. Would you be freeing a slave for your benefit or for the slave's?
ME: Oh, for my benefit!
J: ?!?!? [looking like he was a bit surprise by that answer]
ME: I want to become the kind of person that would free a slave...plus I think the slave might like it too.
.........................................................................................

There is a difference between being and doing. You can do without being, but I'm not so sure you can be without doing. Maybe the process of becoming can only be set in motion during the process of doing.

There is more slavery today than there ever has been. Why don't I give a snap about this? I don't know. Maybe if I work toward freeing a slave, I will come to know the answer.

...to act justly and to love mercy...

also, carrie and I had a blast with you all over break. Sorry to hear about the deathly sicknesses you picked up out in VA, I assure you that I had nothing to do with it!
