I have been thinking about discipleship for some time. I have actually never been spiritually discipled in a formal way by another person. I have been trying to do some with the youth the past few years. I am not sure exactly how to disciple someone. I have my ideas on how it should go, but it does not flesh out that way for a variety of reasons. Maybe it would be good to do a series of posts on the issues as we see them.
A good place to start would be to define discipleship. It is a loaded word in that it has been used by the church for a long time. It probably means different things to different people. I think evangelicals probably would mostly identify it with being in a small group studying the bible in some formal way.
Have you been discipled? How? What is discipleship, not in church or Christian cultural terms, but as Jesus meant it?
I am interested in the process here. Have any ideas on the process of discipleship?

Love this question and thought....I am busy at work but will post later!
there is always the thought that being a disciple is being someone how follows someone else around and learns to be like them...that is probably the one i am most familiar with and most agree with...im sure there are other definitions and i would love to hear them...but at the moment...that is really the only one that pops into my mind...its the one i have been taught for all my life...and just becuase i did learn it at church...doesnt mean it is strictly a church term...a disciple could be anyone...actually...everyone is a disciple to something or other i would guess...
You are right, Aaron. We have all been discipled by many people in our lives related to various things we wanted to learn: our parents, coaches, teachers of different kinds.
Athletic coaching is a good metaphor for spiritual discipling. We consent to join a team to learn a sport. We look to the coach to teach us. We take what we are taught and practice, and the coaches give us corrective feedback. As a result, we make progress.
