Not being currently affiliated with a church has caused me to think about how to spend my time in gathering together. I tend to prefer sitting on my back deck on Sunday mornings with my family. I have been thinking about the idea of a house church. What would it need to be like to be appealing?
For starters, I would be uninterested in a house church that sang songs and had some type of message or bible study. Nothing wrong with these activities, but why go through the trouble of a house church if it is just going to be a slimmed down version of an institutional church? Just go to a regular church for that.
It would also need to not be focused on a single personality. The whole guru or cult of personality model has its limits. As much as I love to listen to Rob Bell's podcasts and hear about what his church is doing, let's admit it, without him, where would Mar's Hill be? Same could be said of many non-denom's. The methodists and orthodox models somewhat prevents to whole cult of personality thing from becoming primary. I would be interested in the synergy of a small group of people who are running a similar spiritual pace.
So what would be a good use of the time? Hmmm.....
