I have chosen sides. I choose love and mercy, which has a name. I think the person, message, and life of Jesus is extraordinary, unique, and compelling. He set in motion a radical movement of exceptional love and mercy. This movement is sustained by that spirit.
It's called the Holy Spirit, not the Holy Power, Holy Miracle, Holy Healing, Holy Give Me What I Want, or any other Holy Non-Spirit.
spir⋅it –noun 1. the principle of conscious life; the vital principle in humans, animating the body or mediating between body and soul.
I like this definition (It must be right, because it is on Dictionary.com. In case you have any additional doubt, it is also on Wikipedia).
The Spirit moves like the wind, undeterred, searching for attentive and obedient followers to establish beachheads for the kingdom; that collection of people is the church (little c). It is that church that will prevail. It is that church that is in the kingdom now and will usher in the kingdom on earth. It is invisible.
I want to join this church. It is a community that I need. How does one find this church?
One could go to a visible Church (big C). With any luck you will find the church there, but there is no guarantee. The church and Churches can overlap, not perfectly, though. The goats and the sheep mingle there. One does not necessarily need to go to a Church to find the church, but it may be a good place to start looking for it.
I have one huge issue, though. It has to do with the non-overlapping part of the Church; that institutional part. An entire culture has grown up around the Church. That culture is like smoke that fills the Church, making it hard to see and stay focused on the church. It causes you to trip over things in the Church. It’s fairly easy to sniff that culture out at Churches. I don’t have much taste for the Church culture apart from the church. I can tolerate the Church culture if I see the church there. But the Church culture can be a huge distraction.
That issue is my dilemma as I am switching Churches. Any suggestions?
